Personal Statement of Candidates
Submitted by tzexian on Fri, 09/25/2009 - 01:56Here are the personal statements of the candidates.
President:

Logann Vishan Mahadaven
B.Economics/LLB (Year 2)
SUAMS Social Director 08/09
Token Indian
I believe that my work here is not done. Consider these two propositions - the improvement of the welfare of the Malaysian student community of the University of Sydney and increasing the exposure of the Malaysian culture to the Australia public.
These are SUAMS's aims and thus far SUAMS has been impeccable in their achievement. This great legacy needs to be continued and I believe that there is much more that can be done and as such I have formulated many plans based on the experience that I have gained in the past year. The position of president is the most appropriate platform for doing so.
I'm experienced, highly approachable, noisy, quick-witten and sexy. I am confident in my ability to bring a fresh feel to an already awesome society. If elected, SUAMS 09/10 will be bringing you more awesome events! That means more fun, more good times and more FOOD. Yes, the all-time priority! HAHA. I have the experience and the motivation to get the job done as well as the drive to bring this society to its highest potential and in doing so providing its best for YOU - OUR MEMBERS. Thank you.

Vice President:
Candidates:
- Stefanie Chew
- Ee Shan Ng

Stefanie Chew
Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies)
Year 3
Hi, my name is Stefanie Chew and I’m doing 4th year Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies) in 2010. I was the Secretary in SUAMS 08/09 committee and this is my 2nd year running for a position in SUAMS.
Why Vice President?
I am running for Vice President in the SUAMS 09/10 committee because I believe that a Vice President role plays a big part in actively contributing to the society. Therefore, I believe that I have the necessary skill set to obtain this position in SUAMS. I also place confidence in the fact that I am approachable, thereby enabling me to reach out to all races and ages.
What I can contribute to SUAMS 09/10:
Being in SUAMS over the past year has also given me learning experience, knowledge, and inspiration to continue being a part of the committee once again. I also think that I have a lot of creative and unique ideas to offer SUAMS as I believe that creativity can get you further than even the greatest management skills.
You should vote for me because....
I believe that an association needs a committee member who is truly dedicated, committed and has the ability to uphold the values of the association to continue the growth of the association. I am dedicated and always have the society’s best interests at heart. I am also aware of my own responsibility as a committee member.
Besides that, I have good communication skills which is a common denominator of being in a committee of any organisation. I will always voice my opinions during meetings and lookout for the members. I say a lot and I do it with meaning. I am also a friendly and approachable person.
I am a team player and emphasize on teamwork a lot, because it is the most important quality in working in a committee. I believe that this is also very important for the role of the VP, because the VP will assist the president and has to be able to coordinate & work well with the other committee members as well. Moreover, the interest of being a team player is likely to assist me in mediating communication within the committee which is essential as the Vice President can often be the key point of communication whether it is to the president, committee members or even SUAMS members.
On top of that, I am willing to take chances because I believe “nothing ventured, nothing gained”. The only way to make any progress is to reach out and make a difference.
You will not regret it if you vote me as your Vice President. =)

Ee Shan Ng
B. Civil Engineering (Year 1)
SUAMS Social Director 08/09
I am running for this position as I believe I am capable of carrying out the duties as Vice President efficiently. I am positively sure that I can lead alongside with our President to bring SUAMS to an even better position than it already is now.I believe I will assist the committee members in any aspects to achieve goals and visions set out together. I am also capable of amending situations by consulting our President, collecting majority votes from committee members as wells as putting our members' benefits as my first priority.
Being the ex-social director, I have learnt a great deal about leadership skills and teamwork along the way. To start off, I hope to plan as well as organise more culturally diversified and beneficial events for members to enjoy while studying in Sydney. SUAMS is the antidote to homesickness for me, and I hope to achieve that for all our members. I believe this can be done so by firstly, planning interesting and attractive events for our members with the committee and encouraging as well as promoting our events to all members. Besides that, I believe I can lead a great committee alongside with our President by ensuring all committee members carry out their delegated tasks efficiently and always having the members' best interest at heart. I also believe that I can take up the responsibilities of leading the whole committee in the event that our President is not present.
If you vote for me, I am confident I can do a good job. I am able to accept opinions and views from others to achieve better results. I am also dependable and reliable as I carry out my duties with integrity and truthfulness. I am approachable and friendly, if you know me personally you would know :) In essence, I am confident that I embody these qualities, but am I perfect? Of course not! But I am willing to work hard each day and go to any lengths to achieve greater good for SUAMS. You can count on it! That would be my dependability and promise to you! :)

Secretary:
Candidates are:
- Tze Xian Young
- Ee Wing Ng

Tze Xian Young
Bachelor of Commerce (2nd Year)
Past Experience:
· SUAMS Student Welfare Officer 08/09
· High School Head Librarian
· Interact Club Treasurer
· Youth Group Leader
Reasons I want to run for secretary:
I would like to take this opportunity to gain new experience before I graduate at the end of next year. Not only that, I would also like to work on my listening and writing skills as well.
My contributions to SUAMS 09/10:
After being in SUAMS for a year, I have noticed what kind of events that members are more interested in attending. With my creativity and experience, I will definitely suggest to the committee members more interesting and fun-filled events for the members. Moreover, I will try to get as much benefits for the members in any way I can.
Why you should vote for me:
The main reason is because I believe that the most important people in SUAMS are our members! Whatever we do, it is all for the benefits of our members. I know that I would definitely do all it takes to do a fantastic job and all I need is for you to give me a chance. Many of you might not know me personally, but for those who have worked with me before would agree that I’m a very efficient, organised and responsible person! Not only that, I have great social and people skills. This would be useful when it comes to dealing with the C&S people because we have to liaise with them when it comes to stuff such as SUAMS event venue booking and everything.
Despite all that I have said, it’s up to you to decide whether I’m qualified to get this position. But I can guarantee you that voting for me is the RIGHT choice!

Ee Wing Ng
B.Commerce (Year 2)
SUAMS Publisher 08/09
As the SUAMS Publisher 08/09, I’ve learnt to be resilient more than anything else. Working in a team has never been easy, however working with people you care about and who care about you in return makes things much better, and being in a family-oriented committee has truly been an experience to me.
Being passionate about our duties is also very important. I believe that if your heart is in something no matter what the challenges are, you'd be willing to go the distance to reach your ultimate goal and I do admit that I am very passionate about our society.
Being in the SUAMS 08/09 committee and working so closely with the Secretary (Stefanie Chew) and Social Directors (Logann & Ee Shan) taught me a lot about their responsibilities and familiarized me with their duties.
Running for Secretary 09/10
The position of secretary interests me the most because I’ve always been more inclined to working with words and rushing for deadlines, therefore getting the minutes done in time would not be a problem. Being the SUAMS Secretary also requires one to deal with C&S and I believe that I have the social skills to improve our society’s public relations with the C&S while getting the job (i.e. venue booking, etc.) done. Due to my obsessive-compulsive nature, I'd like to think that my need for organization will finally pay off by getting things more organized and helping out the rest of the committee with their events. Being one of the Execs, I believe it is one’s responsibility to maintain a conducive atmosphere in the committee and to make sure that everyone will have their voices heard.
What I can contribute to SUAMS 09/10
I have clear visions and missions for my positions and would do my best to achieve those goals, in accordance to our club’s direction and also in line with the goals of our President. I know that I am capable and that I have the personality to make SUAMS 09/10 an awesomeeeee year for all of us!
Why YOU should vote for ME!
Because I’m awesome, hehe! :P And cause the Committee could really do with some smiles, giggles, and all things wonderful throughout the year!

Treasurer:

Tze Xian Young
Reasons I want to run for treasurer:
A Treasurer is one of the most important positions and it requires a lot of responsibility. I know that being a treasurer will be very challenging and I aim to take this opportunity to push and challenge myself to give my very best to SUAMS.
My contributions to SUAMS 09/10:
As Treasurer, I will try to cut down on our costs so that the members don’t have to pay too much for our events. I will suggest low budget but yet interesting and enjoyable events for the members. After being part of the SUAMS committee members for a year, I believe I’m capable in offering the members of SUAMS more fun, unique and exciting ideas. Also, I would like to continue helping the Malaysian students feel closer to home, we Malaysians should always stick together no matter what!
Why you should vote for me:
I have been the Student Welfare Officer of SUAMS for almost a year now, and I can confidently say that I’m very efficient, organised and responsible in what I do whether it is sending emails, facebook events, helping the Publisher updating the SUAMS website, maintaining membership list or organising events. Not only that, I also have very good time management skills as I have been able to complete my tasks at a given due date and still have time to manage my uni work.
Furthermore, I have past experience in being a Treasurer. On top of that, I’m always the one sitting at the registration counter collecting money for every event. I can assure you that SUAMS money is in safe hands, there’s no one else you can trust better than me in handling money related matters. If you think I am suitable for this position, then VOTE FOR ME!

Cultural Directors (2 positions):
Candidates are:
- Ee Shan Ng
- Ming Ying Lim

Ee Shan Ng
please refer to the above for Ee Shan's personal statement

Ming Ying Lim
Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting & Finance)
Year 2
Malaysian culture is a distinct trademark that should be preserved particularly amongst Malaysian students in a foreign country. It would be a great honour to be part of that process. I would also be delighted to help Malaysian students feel at home in Sydney catering to their food cravings.
Be organised and ensure planned events run well, be involved, participate and contribute to other events that require assistance by other committee members.
________________________________________________
Sport Directors:

Ewe Jin Ooi
Bachelor of Science (Year 1)
The reason why I'm running for the Sports Director position is because I wanted to get myself involve in all the sports activity in SUAMS, not only that, I want to be a part of the committee and join in the fun. Most of all I want to know more people!
I would like to organise more sporting events in SUAMS and do as much as possible to help make the sporting events more fun!
If you guys vote for me, I will do my best as sports director and make sure that everyone in the society joins in, enjoy and have fun with all the sporting events we organise.

Social Directors:

Ee Wing Ng
Running for Social Director 09/10
The position of Social Director also interests me because Dance Parties come under the purview of the Social Director. As many of you may already know, Dance Parties are the main revenue generating event for SUAMS; therefore it is of utmost importance that the Dance Parties are organized in a proper manner.
Having read through the (highly successful) Dance Party reports this year, I was able to highlight a few important issues (e.g. venue hire, marketing strategies, etc.) and wish to improve on them.

Publisher:
Josephine Tan Pick Feng
Economics (1st Year)
Blessed with some decent writing skills and the ability to fish for a juicy piece of story, or simply put, the innate ability to be a busybody (or as we Malaysians like to say "kepochi"), I would like to put this knack of mine to good use by running for Publisher. Armed with ideas of improving the SUAMS website and the ROJAK newsletter, I hope to bring SUAMS brand to greater heights within the university community. For the website, I hope to take on a relatively more engaging approach, one that fuels more interaction between members of the Malaysian community within the uni. That aside, I hope to publish the Rojak newsletter in colour with a funkier edge.
My writing experiences include working as a copywriter for a search engine optimizer and contributing to a Malaysian lifestyle magazine known as Tell.
I dabble a little in photography and have recently started taking it a tad bit more seriously to cash in the extra money. I like to think that I photoshop like a devil, so I'll be sure to make you look super-fabulistic in the pictures should I have the opportunity to be the publisher for SUAMS. No stranger to the blogging community back home and in certain circles, I assure you the website will be in good hands. Lastly, I work well in teams and I meet deadlines.
So vote for me, I'll make sure you get the latest, juicest stories. *wink*

Student Welfare Officer:

Ainul Mardhiah Rosli
Bachelor of Economics – Year 1
Bank Negara Malaysia Scholar.
I love milkshakes.
Why am I running for Student Welfare Officer
I am running for welfare particularly because I acknowledge the fact that things have not always been easy for me especially during the beginning of my year here. This is my opportunity to change that for all the new (and current) members out there. After all, this is what SUAMS is all about, ensuring a smooth sailing transition for new students. I am so into that like OH my God!
My contribution as SUAMS 09/10 Committee
I believe that information is of essence when it comes to a successful organization. In terms of change, I would like to be not just that person who sends the message across to everyone, ensuring they have perfect knowledge of the going-ons but also convey feedback effectively from members to the committee. Lets just say I’m all about you, the members of SUAMS. I want your voice to be heard, I want everyone to have a say in our decision making. YOU are my sunshine.
Vote for ME!
Typically, I would say because I’m awesome. But lets cut the vanity and narcissism and go straight to the point:
I would love to be a part of the family and gain first hand involvement in upholding the club’s awesomeness to its members if given the opportunity.
Thank you for reading!

Public Relations Officer:

Siti Nabilah Bajunid bt Mohd Bakke
Commerce & Law (Year 4)
Securities Commission Scholar
Why am I running for Public Relations Officer
I am running for Public Relations as I believe that an organisation needs full support and backing from sponsorship bodies as this is not only important for funding purposes but also for various other reasons.
Therefore, this position is significant as good communication skills are needed to secure a variety of sponsors to aid the organistion's activities in the near future.
My contribution as SUAMS 09/10 Committee
I believe that individual commitment to group effort makes a team work, a company work, a society work and commitment is the most important thing that SUAMS needs, its one thing to have a title as a PR of SUAMS, but it's completely different to actually do things for the society and university. To have the sense of commitment to a group of people is fundamental as group effort as a whole works.
I set out what I need to do and get it done straight away.
Vote for ME!
I think it's important to look at SUAMS a whole instead as the committee and the members.
I'm prepared to take the time for you, to listen and figure out what you want, what you need and get it done for you. Of course this can only be done if you vote for ME!!! :)
Thanks!
